In the center of the Grindmarr, set in a rocky gorge, the Arena is a large circular pit with carved
rock seatings, wooden pillars from which dyed-red banners wave in the cold wind. In bloody
gladiatorial challenges, fighters and animals are pitted against each other for the entertainment
of a willing crowd. The spectacle provides a distraction from the hardships of daily life. The
combattants are often prisoners sentenced to death, or rivaling factions putting forward their
champion for glory. Villagers place bets, for the thrill or hopes to get lucky and earn a wonderful
prize. Entertainers and merchants of various sorts work their way through the crowd before and after
fights, looking to earn a coin. Vague rumors about the head of the arena are beginning to circulate.
